We reached a settlement on behalf of a housewife who was prescribed elmiron following bladder surgery. The prescription was called into the pharmacy, but was filled with imuran instead, an example of a “sound-alike” medication error. Imuran is a medication which is used to depress the body’s immune system to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. After taking the imuran for an extended period of time, her white blood cell counts dropped, causing her to become ill and to have to undergo an otherwise unnecessary bone marrow biopsy to screen for leukemia.
